More US Paranoia

by Shipscook @ 2008-04-29 - 13:54:59

I see the US Dept of Homeland Paranoia now wants to fingerprint "aliens" (that's non US citizens to you and me) when they leave the US as well as when they enter. As you would expect its all in the name of security.

As if it isn't painful enough getting into the the US its now going to be even more time consuming getting out too!

And I guess no US citizens ever blew things up or shot people dead for seemingly trivial reasons eh? Listen here Dubbya the most scary thing about terrorism is that it is international and its perpetrators may well be citizens of the very country they attack.

It's just another example of how the leaders of the so called land of the free (and home of the drive-by shooting) is so insular that anything from outside it's borders is deemed as dangerous and scary. Whether its politics, religeon or cheese.

Now I think that is a shame because I've had some great holidays in the USA and met some really nice people there, but I won't be treated as a criminal by a government, so my holiday pounds are destined for Europe until some kind of sanity resumes.

Ahhh, but us pesky tourists are only going over there to swap ID's with evil people (who will have to look exactly like us to match our passport photos) and would not think of changing our fingerprints.

Even before all of this "Homeland Security est. 1984 - propriator G.Orwell." bollocks it was a pain getting into the USA. Remember that fecking robot on the desk that I confused by simply answering the questions he asked when we flew in to NY in 1990?

I'll be avoiding the US of A :yes. Plenty of places to visit, apart from gaol , where you don't have to be fingerprinted. I have such sensitive skin too. Might be allergic to the ink. I wonder if is green ;)

There are still a few places I used to want to visit in the US, but the last time we went there it was such unbearable hassle clearing immigration and such a totally negative experience that I honestly cannot stand the thought of ever going there again. For once I am not kidding.

US Immigration can be challenging indeed mainly on the inward journey...though I do honestly think that a few airports like Chicago have tried to keep "aliens" flowing through.

Leaving the US always used to be informal with the visa/visa waiver removed by airline staff who also did the passport check. This was almost as if they felt no responsibility for the destination country's issues.

However maybe 18 months ago I was about to board at Dallas-Ft Worth when BA sent me back to some machines that had to read my passport, fingerprints, etc.

Are you saying that this is now going to be the case everywhere?

The idea is that airlines collect the fingerprints at check in (so Homeland Security don't have to pay for it, we the travelling public do)

Imagine what this will do to queing at US Airports when the process has to be explained to 'aliens' who don't speak English

OK, that would be consistent with the approach that airlines do the immigration controls on leaving the US.

I dread this!

I have entered and exited the States with no problems. Maybe because I am Canadian?

My daughter wants to move to the States. Who would have seen that one coming?

Perhaps you folks have a special relationship with the US sharing the longest undefended frontier in the world

Could be hunny.

I happen to be a white female traveling across the border. No problem.

I do know of some people who are not white and not female that have been refused entry to the US simply because of their name and the color of their skin.

And they were born in Canad. Shame really.
